Your local licence and what it covers
FP Markets offers MetaTrader 4, and Kenyan traders can be onboarded under the locally licensed FP Markets Ltd - CMA Non-Dealing Online Foreign Exchange Broker licence No. 103, granted late 2023. That is a real local authorisation, not a pass-through offshore shell. So the setup question is less "can I?" and more "which entity am I signing with, and what does that change?"
MT4 itself is old software by now. It still works, and plenty of Kenyan traders prefer it for custom indicators (EAs) and the MQL4 ecosystem. If that's you, here's what the setup actually looks like in practice.
What MT4 Gives You Here
MT4 on FP Markets runs on both account types, Standard and Raw. The platform supports the usual toolkit: Expert Advisors, custom indicators, one-click trading, and the standard 9 timeframes.
What matters more for Kenyan users is execution and the instrument list behind the terminal. FP Markets carries 10,000+ CFDs across 60+ FX pairs, indices, commodities, shares, ETFs, bonds, and crypto CFDs. MT4 handles FX and metals well; the wider CFD menu is mostly the same account, not a separate platform.
| Feature | What you get on MT4 |
|---|---|
| Account types | Standard and Raw |
| Min deposit | USD 100 |
| Instruments | 60+ FX pairs, metals, indices, commodities, shares, crypto CFDs |
| EAs and custom indicators | Supported |
| Swap-free option | Available on request |
| Base currencies | USD, EUR, GBP, AUD and others |
Worth knowing: MT4 has no built-in economic calendar and no depth-of-market view. If you trade news events around the London-New York overlap (roughly 16:00-19:00 EAT, the busiest window for Kenyan traders), you'll be alt-tabbing to a separate calendar.
Signing Up and KYC
Setup starts with the account application, and for Kenyan residents this means KYC documents: national ID or passport, a KRA PIN certificate, and proof of address (utility bill or bank statement).
Expect the verification step to take a working day or two if your documents are clean. Blurry scans and mismatched addresses are the usual cause of delay, not the broker.
Once verified, you choose your entity. This is the part most people skip, and it matters.
After that, download MT4 from the client portal, log in with the credentials emailed to you, and connect to the correct server. If the server name on your login doesn't match the platform list, that's almost always the reason for a "no connection" message.
Funding the Account
Minimum deposit is USD 100, and there are no broker-side deposit fees. The payment methods listed are cards, bank wire, and e-wallets.
A practical caveat for Kenyan traders: local M-Pesa and KES rails are likely but not verified at review, and KES account availability is also unconfirmed. So budget for a conversion cost if your account is USD-denominated - that spread between KES and USD at deposit and withdrawal is a real line item most people forget to account for.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Minimum deposit | USD 100 |
| Broker deposit fees | None |
| Methods | Cards, bank wire, e-wallets |
| Local M-Pesa / KES rails | Likely, not verified at review |
| Conversion cost | Applies where account is USD-denominated |
Typical local rails in Kenya, for reference, run through M-Pesa (per-transaction limit KES 250,000, daily KES 500,000), Airtel Money, T-Kash, Pesalink, and Visa/Mastercard. If your broker supports them, deposits and withdrawals are usually instant and free on the local side.

Costs on Each Account Type
This is where MT4 setup decisions actually cost or save you money. The two account types are built for different trading styles.
| Account | Spread | Commission | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | ~1.0-1.2 pips | None | Position traders, lower-frequency setups |
| Raw | 0.0-0.1 pips on EUR/JPY | ~USD 6 per round-turn lot | Scalpers, high volume, tight stops |
In practice, a scalper doing 20 round-turns a day on Raw pays roughly USD 120 in commission. On Standard with 1.1-pip spreads on EUR/JPY (about USD 11 per standard lot), the same 20 trades cost roughly USD 220. Raw wins clearly there.
Flip it around: if you place 3-4 trades a week, the Standard account's commission-free structure is simpler to track, and the wider spread is a rounding error against your overall P&L.
Leverage, Margin, and Reality Checks
Leverage is up to 1:500 available via the FP Markets group. On the CMA-regulated local entity, CMA rules cap retail leverage at around 1:400 for major FX pairs. That sounds generous, and it is - but it cuts both ways.
At 1:400, a 0.25% adverse move against you wipes out your margin. On EUR/JPY, 0.25% is roughly 25 pips. That's a normal London session wiggle, not a crash.
The practical move: set your MT4 leverage lower than the maximum, and let your position sizing do the work. High leverage is a tool for capital efficiency, not a strategy.
Regulatory context, briefly. Retail forex and CFDs are legal and regulated in Kenya. Any firm offering online forex to Kenyan residents must hold a valid CMA licence (dealing, non-dealing, or money-manager). Licensed brokers must meet minimum paid-up capital of KES 50 million, segregate client funds, cap leverage, and submit to audits. Offshore entities serving residents without a CMA licence sit outside that framework, which means no local recourse if something goes wrong. That is the reason to check the CMA register at licensees.cma.or.ke before you deposit anywhere, not just here.
Negative-balance protection isn't confirmed as an explicit blanket statutory requirement in Kenya - worth asking the broker directly and getting it in writing.
Where MT4 Shows Its Age
MT4 is a single-threaded platform built for FX. If your strategy is mostly currency pairs and gold, it's fine. If you're trading indices, crypto CFDs, or shares on the same account, MT5 handles multi-asset and multi-timeframe backtesting far better.
Three limits worth flagging before you commit:
- No economic calendar inside the terminal, so news trading means a second screen.
- No depth-of-market, unlike cTrader.
- Backtesting is slow and single-currency per pass - long optimization runs will test your patience.
None of these are dealbreakers for a pure FX or gold trader. They matter if you're diversifying into other CFDs.
Setting It Up Properly
Small configuration choices on day one save headaches later:
- Set your chart template and save it, so new charts open the way you want.
- Enable "One Click Trading" only if you actually want it - accidental clicks are real.
- Test your EA on a demo account for at least two weeks before going live.
- Note your server name and account number somewhere offline.
- Check swap rates on the pairs you trade if you hold overnight, or request the swap-free option.
The swap-free Islamic account is available, which matters if you're among Kenya's Muslim trading community and hold positions overnight.
